Animated movie based on a true story of the prophet Bilal, who was a slave boy that stood up for his freedom and against idol worship and greed in his community. The film is refreshingly devoid of all the usual trappings, like animals and birds talking and super-powers engaging in over-the-top action. The animation is slick and the performances are well above average for a drama of this kind. It was a bold move to make a film about a true hero of Islam and the Arab/Muslim world, but Bilal pulls it off without turning into a preachy or saccharine piece. It is a film that will appeal to both young and old.
