It creates a hostile driving environment and contributes to traffic congestion. In addition to its social and safety impact, it can cost people their jobs, homes and lives.

The most common cause of road rage is someone else’s bad driving, such as tailgating or speeding. However, a host of factors can trigger an emotional response in a driver. These include culturally learned aggressive and risk taking driving habits, environmental conditions such as traffic density and unexpected slowdowns at construction areas, and cumulative number of miles driven. In addition, a growing number of drivers carry weapons in their cars, which can escalate a road rage incident into an assault.

Angry drivers can be a big problem for everyone, especially in cities like Miami and Atlanta. According to a survey by AutoVantage, these cities have been dubbed “Road Rage Capitals” for three years running.

Other road rage behavior includes making rude gestures, shouting and cursing at other drivers or pedestrians. More than half of those surveyed claimed to have yelled or cursed at another driver in the past year. Some even admitted to bumping or ramming another car on purpose, and 2% of drivers admit to trying to run someone off the road.

Road rage is more prevalent among younger drivers. The generation born between 1981 and 1996, known as Millennials, caused over 50% of aggressive driving incidents in the country, while Gen X, the generation about to retire, only caused 21%.
